_2011 devon junior male player of the year
Congratulations to Tom Smith who was presented with the shield for the best junior male players of the year for 2011. This is the second year that a player form SBJC has picked up this award (Adam Whitfield in 2010), and Tom was a very deserving winner following his results over the last 12 months. In particular his Silver at the Kent International and his bronze at the Welsh Open to name just a couple.
Well done Tom, from everyone at SBJC, this is recognition for all the hard work you put in to improving your Judo. |

Finally, thanks to Steve & Hannah for coaching the players on the day, and to Louise & Pete for officiating. |
2012 Devon closed team championships
Once again this event was held at Quayside Leisure Centre, Kingsbridge, and what a morning we had on 12-2-12! The boys team won all 3 of their matches against WBB JC, Ronindo JC & Kingsley School JC convincingly 6:3, and so became Devon Team Champions for the first time, making up for the disappointment of being runners up last year. The boys team was made up of David Grey U30kg, Tom Smith U34kg, Ewan Baker U38kg, Adam Whitfield U42kg, Lewis Widdicombe U46kg, Tom Ingram U50kg, Joe Groves U55kg & John Whitfield U60kg, supported by reserves Jamie Medd U30kg, Henry Higgins-Wright U34kg, James Brown U38kg, Jack Skinner U42kg & Jacob Atkins U46kg. For the first time the club were able to enter a girls team, and they came within 2 contests of matching the boys at the first attempt. Their first match was a close 3:4 defeat by WBB JC, but they bounced back strongly beating Plymouth JC 4:1, and so finished as runners up. The girls team was made up of Maddie hawkins U40kg, Libby Daymond U44kg, Stephanie Smith U48kg & Rosanna Haigh U57kg. Our teams were a credit to the club, thank you & well done to you all. Thanks to Steve & Pete for coaching them on the day. |
2012 Midlands Age Bands.
The Midlands Age Banded event is a national ranking event, so it's one of the bigger events of the domestic junior calendar, and was held over the weekend of the 28th & 29th January 2012 at Wolverhampton University's Walsall Campus. Day 1: In the 'B' band Tom Ingram had a good day winning 2 contests and finishing in a credible 7th place in the Under 50kg category, made even more impressive as this was his first event at this weight. Adam Whitfield in his first 'B' Band event just couldn't get going in the Under 42kg category, and was elliminated early in the competition. Day 2: The club had 3 players competing in the 'A' Band section of the event. Ewan Baker at Under 38kg and Lewis Widdicombe at 42kg, both showed that they are increasingly competitive at this level of competition by winning one contest each, which in the Under 42kg put Lewis in joint 7th place. But once again it was Tom Smith in the Under 34kg category who made it into the medals, winning 4 of his 5 contests to take a well deserved bronze. Well done lads, excellent effort once again, the club is very proud of you all. |
2012 Commonwealth Judo Championships
On Sunday 22nd January Steve & Pete travelled to Cardiff for the Fighting Films Commonwealth Judo Championships which were being hosted by the Welsh Judo Association. The test scales were available from midday at the Cardiff Bay Futures Inn, so that was first on the agenda, 600g under :) Next it was onto event accreditation (BJA licence & passport at the ready) to get our official athletes & coaches passes so we would be allowed into the competition venue which was the Welsh Millenium Centre (aka the Welsh National Theatre!). Then it was time for Pete to hand over his blue & white Judogi jackets, so that the organisers could sew on the event backpatches. There were then a couple of hours to find our Premier Inn, book in & get sorted for the weigh in & official draw. Back to the Futures Inn for the official weigh in, then into dress suits & on to the Millenium Centre for the official draw, & if you think it takes a long time for the contests to get going at a Mini Mons event, think again!!! Pete's age band was combined with the one above which made a group of three, one 6th Dan, one 3rd Dan & guess who! Back to the hotel for a meal & final preparations. Having breakfasted, Judogi's were collected from the Futures Inn at 8am, and then over to the competition venue to get changed & onto the warm up mat. Pete was scheduled to be the 5th contest on Mat 3 in blue judogi, so having warmed up, players & coaches were escorted down to Judogi Control where just about every dimemsion of Pete's suit were check with the official IJF measuring 'stick', before access to the dojo was permitted. Steve & Pete were then escorted to Mat 3. First up Pete had Paul Horseman 6th Dan. It started well with Pete getting in the first attack which he then transitioned to the ground with an attempted armlock, but then he can't remember the next half an hour! In the next exchange Pete spun to avoid being thrown backwards, landed on his head & was concussed, having then been turned over & put in a hold that was the end of that contest, & effectively the event for Pete. After 5 minutes first aid on the mat, Pete spent 20 minutes being checked out by a South African doctor (no one deserves that job!), before being released back into the general population with a recommendation not to continue with the event. Back in the warm up area, Pete eventually 'came back to us', just in time to be called for his second contest! A slightly confused Pete took Steve's advice that it probably wasn't a good idea to contest the fight. So Pete then changed into his white gi, and was once again escorted down to so if it was IJF legal, here Pete agreed with Steve Ashford 3rd Dan that he would conceed the contest to him. The formalities of this proceeded in due course, much to the relief of the officials, who didn't look too happy about Pete's reappearance at the mat! There was then time to watch some of the contests, and with ex-international players returning to the mat to compete in Masters Judo these days, there was some great action. Finally it was time for the medal presentaions where having been given their medals, the medalists then walked (fanfare playing) into one of the boxes all decked out with the sponsors banner. So Pete picked up his consolation bronze, not in the circumstance he'd have wanted, but then there's always the 2014 Commonwealths in Glasgow! |
2011 Western Area Team Championships
Well what a great start to the year with 17 members of the club being selected to represent Devon, and so gaining their county honours! This is the fourth year in a row that the number of players from the club gaining county recognition has increased. And the first event of the year was the rearranged 2011 Western Area Team Championships, held on 15-1-12 at Wellsprings Leisure Centre, Taunton. The selections were as follows:
|
2011 Devon Low Grades Competition
A squad of 21 players, the biggest group of club members to attend an event this year, competed in the first running of this event at Quayside Leisure Centre, Kingsbridge. To support the players the club called on the coaching services of Steve & Hannah Squire, who did a great job guiding the players to the club's best ever medal haul for a single event. In the Under 12 Red & Yellow Belts Section the following players medalled: Gold - Samuel Cook, Libby Daymond, David Grey, Tom Grundy, George Hubbard, Adam Vosper. Silver - Jacob Atkins, George Fone-Hawkins, Archie Gilroy, Henry Higgins-Wright. Bronze - Ben Close, Matt Cronin, Maddy Hawkins, Jack Skinner, Emily Widdicombe. Under 16 Red & Yellow Belts Section: Silver - Joe Groves, Lawrence Pettitt, Bronze - Damon Smith Senior Blue & Brown Belts Section: Silver - Hannah Squire, Bronze - Ethan Anning ( + 10 points towards his 1st Dan) Well done to everyone who took part, players, coaches & officials, the club is really proud of all of you. The medals won at this event pushed the club's total number of medals for 2011 to 117 (more than twice as many as we won last year), and the club's first 100+ year. Roll on 2012!!! |
2011 Samurai High Grades Competition
A couple of the club's senior players headed up to the Wyre Forest Glades Arena on 13-11-11 in search of medals and Dan grade points. Steve Squire didn't fair so well, but Will Freeborn had a day he will remember forever! In his pool of 4 Will won 2 and lost 1, so went through to the knock-out phase as pool runner-up. Unfortunately, he then was eliminated from the main knock-out and had to continue in the repechage, which he did by winning his next 2 contests. So at the end of the day Will had picked up a Bronze medal, but more importantly he had secured the remaining points he need to be promoted to his 1st Dan. Congratulations Will, everyone at SBJC is delighted for you, very well done! |
2011 Gloucester Open
On Saturday 5th November, a group of 3 players made the journey up the M5 to Newent for the Gloucester Junior Open. First up were the Under 12's, where Tom Smith at U34kg continued his impressive form this year. Tom won all his preliminary contests to book a place in the final, where he fought well but ended up with the silver. Next up was Ewan Baker at U38kg, who had some tough opposition in the form of 2 National 'A' Band medalists, but Ewan gave a good account of himself and took a well deserved bronze. Finally Tom Ingram took the mat in the Under16 section at U46kg, where he beat the other player at this weight to take gold. |
2011 Welsh Open
5 club players travelled to Cardiff to complete in this event. Everyone fought hard, with the stand out performance coming from Tom Smith who took a Bronze in the 'A' band, Under 34kg category. The club's other medal came via Pete Whitfield who picked up a consolation Bronze in the Masters 40-49 years, Under 73kg category. |
2011 Plymouth Open
The club had 12 players competing at the Kitto Centre on Sunday 23rd October in the Plymouth Open. At Under 12 the following players medalled: U44kg Libby Daymond - Gold, U42kg Lewis Widdicombe - Gold, U27kg David Grey - Silver, U34kg Tom Smith - Silver, U42kg Ewan Baker - Silver, U42kg - Jacob Atkins - Bronze. Once again this year an excellent performance by all those who competed. The club also had 3 officials on duty, with John Whitfield: Timekeeping, Hannah Squire: Recording, & Pete Whitfield: Refereeing. |
2011 Kendal Open
Whilst on holiday in the Lake District, Adam Whitfield competed in the Kendal Junior Open. After the contests in his category were completed, he was one of 3 players who had tied for second place in the Under 38kg. However in the resulting second round of contests he didn't far so well and ended up finishing with a Bronze. |
2011 Neil Adams Training Camp
A group of players from the club enjoyed a hard weekend's training at Newquay Leisure Centre, under the instruction of Neil Adams 8th Dan, former World Champion, twice Olympic Silver Medalist & numerous times European Champion. The families of many of those participating made a weekend of it, camping at nearby Morgan Porth, enjoying the local beaches & having a very social BBQ. Thanks to Jason Beer from Mid Cornwall Judokwai for arranging to have Neil as the guest coach, and organising the training camp. We're all looking forward to next year's camp. |
2011 Bristol INTERCounty Challenge
Three of the club's players represented the county in the Devon Junior Team at this invitation event held at Bedminster Judokwai's dojo at Ashton School on Sunday 17-7-11. The event organised by Bristol County Judo, saw teams from Nottinghamshire, Hampshire, Worcestershire, Bristol & Devon competing in this inaugral running of the event. The lightest weight in the Devon team was filled by George Hubbard at Under 30kg, making his county debut, and George gave an excellent account of himself. At Under 34kg, Tom Smith fought hard against some strong opposition. Next up was Adam Whitfield who competed at both Under 38kg & 42kg, in an attempt to make the team more competitive, due to a number of last minute withdrawals. This certainly provided him with a good workout, as he pushed himself hard for the county cause! |
2011 High Wycombe Grading
Steve, Hannah, Will & Paul travelled up to the High Wycombe Judo Centre for one of their quarterly Dan Gradings. Steve got the remaining points he needed to be promoted to the grade of 3rd Dan, the first South Brent player to achieve this milestone - very well done Steve from everyone at the club. Hannah took another step closer gaining 10 points from he win, and Will had a good day taking 20 points & passing his theory exam, so these two are getting very close now! Paul, competing at his first competitive Dan grading had 'a hard day at the office', but learnt a lot, and can't wait for the next opportunity to have a go. Well done to all. |
2011 West of England Championships

2011 Bedminster Youth & Senior Competition
Two of the club's senior players competed at this event, held at Ashton Park School, Bristol.
Will Freeborn started with Under 100kg Black Belt & below section in which he picked up a Bronze. Then in the Brown belt & below he was undefeated & took the Gold. Steve Squire competed in the Under 81kg Black Belt & below section. Steve ended the day with 2 wins & 2 losses, and took a Bronze. |
2011 Kent International Competition
Tom Smith made SBJC history on Saturday 25-6-11, by medalling at the Kent International competition held at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre. Competing in the Red & Yellow belt section, at Under 34kg, Tom won 5 contests in a row, all with Ippon throws, to book his place in the final. Unfortunately, he was caugh & held down, but an excellent effort by Tom to take the club's first medal from this event. Also competing over the weekend were: Ewan Baker, Lewis Widdicombe (also in the Red & Yellow belt section), Adam Whitfield, Tom Ingram (in the Orange & Green belt section), and Steve Squire (in the Senior section).
Tthis was the biggest squad of players the club has sent to the Kent International, and although they had mixed fortunes in their various contests, they all gained a lot of experience from competing at this level of event. |
School 2 Dojo link with Ivybridge Cc
It was congratulations all round when newly appointed MBE Michalea Breeze visited the club, to accept the Black School 2 Dojo certificate on behalf of Ivybridge Community College. This link between ICC & SBJC is the first Black S2D link to be developed in the BJA's Western Area. Head Coach Steve Squire, along with some of the club's players who attend ICC, presented the certificate to Michaela, who teaches PE at ICC. Michaela also leads the college's Strength & Conditioning Sessions, which are a part of ICC's Gifted & Talented Programme. Michaela won Weightlifting medals at Junior World, European & Commonwealth events, including 2 Commonwealth Golds, as well as competing at the 2004 & 2008 Olympic Games. Michaela is working in partnership with Steve, to provide strength & conditioning sessions in the college's weight training facilities, for those players who compete at the British School's Championships. |

In addition to becoming the Western Area Champion at the Pete Murphy in May, winning another 3 Golds, 1 Silver & 4 Bronzes, Adam also placed 5th at the 'A' Band Nationals in September, and all this despite starting 2010 with a broken collar bone. Well done Adam, congratulations from everyone at the club, we're all really pleased you've won this award in recognition for all the hard work you put in to your Judo. |

After the presentations there was a chance to try your luck on the Roulette wheel and the Black Jack table, or for the more energetic - a disco. It is great to have all Pete & Sarah's hard work at the club recognised at this national event, and to see the club further enhancing it's excellent reputation. |
2010 British Championships for 10 & 11 Year Olds
On 19-9-10 SBJC had it's first representative at the British 'A' Band National Championships, with Adam Whitfield making the journey up to the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, in London.
Unfortunately Adam weighed in heavy, and so moved up into the U38kg categoty. However he got off to a good start winning his 1st and 2nd round contests to set up a semi-final match. It was at this stage of the competition that the weight Adam was giving away to his opponents finally started to tell. He lost the semi-final, and then the Bronze medal contest, to finish in a very credible 5th place. Congratulations Adam, this is the highest placing of any Devon male competitor, junior or senior, in 2010. |
2010 Bedminster Mini Mon Competition

2010 British Schools Championships
On Sunday 21st March 2010, the British Schools Judo National Individual Championships were held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. South Brent Judo Club member Hannah Squire, was competing in the Young Womens Under 63kg category. In her first contest Hannah got off to a flying start by throwing her opponent for Ippon in just 15 seconds. Hannah's second contest was a very hard fought affair, lasting longer than any other fight in the weight catagory. Unfortunately Hannah sustained a knee injury during this contest and eventually lost by 2 Wazari's. Determind to finish the competition, Hannah strapped up her injured knee, and put up a brave fight, eventually lossing again by 2 Wazari's. So it was a very credible bronze medal at this national event, and having beaten the eventual gold medalist so easily in her first contest, but for that knee injury, a sense of what might have been!
