How long has the club been going?

1970 - South Brent Judo Club was established by Roy and Esther Warnes with seventeen members at South Brent Primary School. To start the school managed to borrow a Judo mat from Newton Ferrers School. Over time enough money was raised with the help of Devon County Council to purchase some of our own. Members paid 2p a week!!

1985 - Roy and Esther retired. The club then had a number of coaches over the next 5 years.

1990 - A committee was formed with Alan Tout as the chairperson, and home grown coaches Mark Nicholls and Richard Cleave, taking the sessions. The Club subsequently moved to the pavilion at Palstone Park Recreation Ground, where new mats were needed. After a lot of fundraising we were able to purchase 30 new mats, to create a new mat area suitable for the space in the pavilion.

1994 - Mark retired from Judo, and Richard Cleave was joined by Peter Ash, Lee Hard and Gary Craig.

2003 - Richard Cleave unfortunately suffered a stroke and retired from coaching at the club, but still involved with Judo today.

2006 - Steve Squire became the club coach, and having started Judo at the club became another of our home grown coaches.

2008 - The club developed school/club links with Ivybridge Community College and Stowford Primary School, and gained the Sport England Bronze Clubmark accreditation. Club members bettered their medal tally form 2007, and the club was successful in obtaining grant funding. 5 players achieved county honours, and the club won a total of  41 medals (7 Gold, 10 Silver & 24 Bronze).

2009 - The club developed a school/club link with Ugborough Primary School, and upgraded it's link with Ivybridge Community College to a Blue Link (the first BJA Blue School2Dojo Link in the BJA Western Area). Using the grant funding obtained at the end of 2008, the club replaced its mats, club Judo suits and safety mattresses. It also bought additional safety mattresses, a number of throwing dummies, an electronic scoreboard and a range of other training equipment. Over the course of the year the club's Level 2 Coaches have completed the assimulation process, to upgrade their qualification to the new UKCC Level 2 coach award. In addition 4 of the club's senior members have completed their UKCC Level 1 coach award. In December 2009 we became the first club in the BJA Western Area to achieve the Sport England Silver Clubmark award. 11 players achieved county honours, and the club won a total of 50 medals (7 Gold, 14 Silver & 29 Bronze).

2010 - The club was visited by BJA Chairman - Densign White, who presented South Brent JC with their Sport England Silver Clubmark certificate. During the course of the year 4 members of the club qualified as competition officials, 2 as BJA Timekeeper/Scorers and 2 as BJA Level 1 Junior Referees. In October 2 members of the club received Bronze Volunteer Awards at the BJA's Annual Awards evening in Birmingham. 9 players achieved county honours, and the club won a total of 56 medals (11 Gold, 15 Silver & 30 Bronze).
